From Ms. Katy Bell:

Our pal Mark Growden, the music man who has entertained us for so many years, needs our help. Mark was injured somewhat seriously in a bicycle accident a few weeks ago. He was riding his fancy roadbike, training for the upcoming AIDS Ride, and the frame of the bike snapped. He broke four or so bones in his back, and dislocated his shoulder. He cannot play his music, nor train for his ride, the two things he was focusing most of his time doing. The former was how he was paying the rent. He has lost his place to live. This is all on the heels of his efforts to get his health and his life back on track.

I’ve spoken with Mark some, and he is, in his own words, “spiritually strong,” and keeping his recovery on track which I find awesome in the face of this setback. But he does need a little help from his friends. A couple of us folks have taken up the case. I hope we can count on your help.

Here’s what we’re asking:

First, the easiest and most timely item, getting some cash in Mark’s pocket. He has a paypal account set up through his email: markgrowden@gmail.com)
If you can afford to send him some scratch, please do asap.

Second, Mark had scheduled a benefit at 12 galaxies on March 29 to raise funds for his AIDS Ride. This is now, as Sister Mable puts it, A Benefit for the Being of Mark Growden. Please mark your calendars and attend this show. It will be amazing.
The Carnival Takes Over The San Francisco Streets!

Ahhh yes, my beautiful family – it is happening!
An idea bred in our dear Douglas’s noggin’ for the opportunity to take some pretty pictures of beautiful people in interesting settings (or vice versa vice, vice vice versa, any way you want it) this Saturday, December 22nd we gather and call the streets ours!

This is a time of celebration, so let’s make this Solstice, the darkest day of the year, shine with colors that only those of the Circus wear – let’s friggin’ BLIND the confused passerby with our beauty, shed our own light, dark, odds and delicious ends, and create an exquisite mayhem!

This is purely Doug’s idea, but I think I’ll throw a bit more delicious magick into it, as this opportunity is far too good to pass up, and for some reason, the guy has given me free reign for the gathering of people… and I’ve decided that it’s time to shake some dust!

We’re making this an event.

This will be purely a playtime, joined by members of our dear friends and family (and Top Royalty of the San Francisco Circus Scene) VAU de VIRE SOCIETY & GOOFERMAN, so get your sweet, twisted asses in gear and come play with us. We’ll be doing what we do and looking our best, roaming the streets and finding various San Francisco scenes to play on and around, titillating the innocent passerby, and letting *them* shoose what kind of dreams they want to go home with. We won’t be cooped up in a club or ruled by the laws they need to abide by, not constricted by the limitations in the corporate world – this is OUR FUCKING DAY!

Let’s face it – the goddamn bunnies (gods, I loathe bunnies) have theirs, the Santa’s have theirs, the pirates, zombies, Pee Wee’s – the list goes on. Well, my dear, dear beautiful Circus Family, THIS will be ours. You know as much as I do how needed it is, and it’s far past due. (If it were a library book, we’d be fucked.)

The route for this Saturday is still being figured out by Doug, but the meeting place for this first year will be the Xenodrome, on 26th and Portrero in San Francisco.

The actual day it happens in the future will very likely change to a warmer one later, but this is the first, annual or whenever we feel like it, and like the Carnival, it could show up anywhere, anytime.

Please come this Saturday - to the very first of many - CARNIVALIA!

We will be thrilled to see you!

*** Doors, preparation and PHOTOS at Xenodrome - 9:00am, with Douglass & possibly Nightshade shooting pictures in our beautiful sets.

***Leaving Xenodrome at 11:30am, as sharp as we can get it!

The route is at this point a secret (even to us) and at times even might be decided by consulting the Oracles, so get your asses there by the time we leave, okay?

*Dress in your circus best, but dress warm – the weather is supposed to be a bit chilly, but no rain.

>>>Added Bonus for this day! <<<
After Carnivalia, our dear friend and kick-ass guy Mark Growden is playing at 12 Galaxies for a Solstice Celebration with Tobias, The Nekyia, & others!

July 11 to 14

The Crucible’s Fire Arts Festival celebrates creativity through fire and light with a spectacular open-air exhibition of interactive fire art.

The centerpiece and finale of the Festival is the Fire Odyssey, a modernized theatrical interpretation of Homer’s epic poem, blending industrial fire theatre with ballet, opera, hip hop, and aerial dance, accompanied by live music provided by Mark Growden and a handpicked ensemble. The cast includes ballet star Easton Smith as Odysseus, opera singer Aimee Puentes as Penelope, Mongolian contortionist Serchmaa Byamba as Circe; members of the renowned hip-hop troupe Flavor Group as Odysseus’ men, puppeteer Jonathan Youtt in a monstrous puppet suit as the Cyclops, and more. Four 35-foot-tall welded sculptures of Greek gods, created by Dan Das Mann & Karen Cusolito, interact with performers: Poseidon, connected to an Oakland Fire Department pumper truck, sends sea storms across the 8,000-gallon moat that surrounds the stage; Aeolius bedevils Odysseus with steam-filled gales; Zeus shoots white hot lightning bolts, while Athena has fire at her command.

Surrounding The Fire Odyssey stage is the work of forty installation artists, an amazing collection of interactive fire sculpture and art that invites (and sometimes requires) you to become a part of the event. Michael Christian’s IT, a forty-foot tall, spider-like structure, looms high above the crowd. The Serpent Mother, a 168' long, sculpture of a skeletal serpent, sends jets of flame aloft from the 41 flame-throwers that erupt from the top of her vertebrate.

I played the the accoustic guitar back then, before I was so hell bent on being the 1manBanjo that I am today. so it is my thanks to mark for bestowing faith in me, for rocking so hard as he is prone to do, inspiring and supporting.

Hi lovelies,
I doing really well.

The plan,...
- Hit at least one AA or NA meeting a day for the next few months.

- I'm looking for the right SLE (Sober Living Environment/transitional housing) for me. I'm looking primarily in SF. Too many triggers in Oakland even though I LOVE this town. I'm also considering SLEs in Marin, Sonoma and Contra Costa counties but I don't want to be too far from the kids.

- I need work. I'm thinking of teaching again as long as it's not too many hours. I am going to continue performing and recording (I have enough un-recorded material for a few albums) BUT,... I AM NOT GOING TO BE PLAYING IN CLUBS OR BARS AGAIN FOR A LONG TIME IF EVER. I've always preffered theaters, living rooms, warehouses and special spots like Sutro Baths, Sausal Creek and the Albion Castle's Catacombs. I'll consider playing some rooms like Great American Music Hall if it's the right situation.

It's critical in my life that I stay clean and sober. My sobriety is like a very fragile and tender bird that I'm holding close to my heart. I need to be vigilant in protecting him.

Help/Assistance I need:
- If you know of good AA or NA meetings in the Bay Area please pass the info along. Last night I went to a meeting in Oakland that sucked. Truly.

- I need transportation and support to go check out different SLEs.

- I need friends to play basketball and handball or pretty much any sports with. I've been excercising like crazy, I'm in great shape and I want to keep it up. It really helps me with my bipolar disorder (which is type three; rapid cycling/mixed). It can be brutal. My doctor told me that the substance abuse rate for my type of bipolar is over %70 and the suicide rate is over %30. I've attempted suicide over 10 times since I was 14 and I don't ever want to go there again.

I crying to hard too keep writing. Good tears.

I'm going to go eat some good food.
I love you. Thank you so much for your support.
xo

I would have posted earlier, but I just joined tribe today. Yeah, I am a lagger.

I dropped Mark off at rehab on Friday morning. He was doing really well, and is very dedicated to seeing this thing through. He will be there for six weeks.

He is staying at Cronin House in Hayward, it seems to be a pretty intense program. He is not allowed visitors or to make or receive phone calls until three weeks into treatment.

I have an address if you would like to send him letters, but I will wait to post it until tomorrow, as I just checked their website and there are multiple addresses listed. I am not sure if the address I have is the correct one to use for getting mail directly to him. I plan on calling them in the morning and verifying the mailing address, and then I will post it for all of you.

Know that Mark is doing so well, you should all be proud of him. He had a really good attitude towards everything going in, so I am sure he will get through this and come back to all of you stronger than ever. He sends his love.
We are Gypsies for today's world, wandering in a maze of modernity. We are a myriad of cultures, old and new, picking up what we need and defying the taboos that bind us. We are modern and primitive, urban and tribal, medusa and machine. We are living, evolving, timeless. We are Ultra Gypsy.

Ultra Gypsy--a pioneering force in the belly dance scene--is an innovative dance theatre company that is currently reinventing the controversial art form, bellydance. Led by Jill Parker, one of the founding dancers in FatChance BellyDance, Ultra Gypsy has been one of the Bay Area's premiere dance troupes since its foundation in 1996. With an artistic range encompassing everything from traditional Tunisian dance with authentic live musicians to avant-garde fire performances to electronic Aarabic tracks spun by the top DJs around the world, Ultra Gypsy has packed the house at a variety of venues including The San Francisco Fire Garden, Burning Man, The Crucible and The San Francisco Ethnic Dance Festival along with regular appearances at fine theaters and the hottest night spots around the country.

Ultra Gypsy conducts popular belly dance classes and workshops for all levels at studios in San Francisco and beyond. With over fifteen years of experience, Jill Parker has earned a reputation for helping everyone from first-time dancers to some of the world's best professionals. Many Fine dancers were groomed in her company, including Rachel Brice, Sharon Kihara, Frederique David and Shawna Rai. Ultra Gypsy boasts the biggest and best student base in the bay area.

Musicians enjoy instruction and practice opportunities in our open-air venues. Both dancers and musicians study with world-renowned professional teachers in a wide variety of styles from different cultures.

And all campers enjoy the luxuries of Saratoga Springs Resort, nestled just over 2 hours north of both San Francisco and Sacramento in 260 private acres of forest. Miles of hiking trails with breathtaking views of nearby Clearlake and access to natural mineral springs, surround a pair of lodges with both indoor sleeping accommodations and clean camp grounds, complete with a spacious pool and large jacuzzi. All meals are provided by our professional chef and feature a gourmet menu with an eclectic array of world cuisines and a full bar serving reasonably priced mixed drinks, beer, and wine after dinner. Evenings feature concerts and dance performances by students and staff in the immaculate Heart Lodge, and open-floor dancing with late-night jamming afterwards.

a late brooklyn evening, we sat inside a bar that looked like an unfinished parlor in an old victorian. painted and asymetric, tin-tiled ceiling with walls all tuscan yellow, rust and blood. the bar called stain. in one horizontal line around the space, a gallery of pictures. pictures of pieces of the bar's walls and ceiling.

the snow fell silently behind the stage through four plastic-wrapped windows, each bearing one red paint-stroked letter spelling *ugly*. yet it was lovely.

the stage was small and more like a separate living room. and in this little tea corner, upon a small table next to two velour movie theater seats, lay a spectacular banjo. and in a simple wooden chair behind the spectacular banjo, sat mark, holding two almost empty bottles, pressed to his lips like flutes. and so began his performance.

we sat in this drafty magic space, listening to a beautiful man of song, whose only accompaniment was the hissing of a stark white radiator and the occasional haunting of aretha and dolly. he went from bottles to banjo to accordion, sitting atop the bar like it was a school room storytime from another dimension. surely it was. he was sleepy and somber, a state which carried his tune with no room for dishonesty or pretension.

and the snow fell. and the boy sang. and my love and respect grew even deeper.

thank you, mark.
I Love NYC.
I'm having a great time.

Events so far:
- Last night I was asked to share the stage with Peaches at a private party. (I was already at a party in Philli so I had to decline, but it'll happen again).

- I ran into a woman on the A Train this evening who looked familiar. I introduced myself and she exclaimed "Mark Growden! I used your movie in my film!..... I owe you money."

- I went to this great hip-hop club called "Sugar Hill" in the hood. The owner "Eddy" overheard me singing along with one of the tracks they were playing and Asked me to come perform. Then hed invited me to come sit with him and his posse. They showed me how they smoke Black and Milds in NY and fed me plenty of "Eddy Specials" (the owners signature drink made with top-shelf cognac and who knows what else). When we left they took me to the Marcy Projects so I could see where their cousin Jay Z grew up. Good folks and they've go my back in Brooklyn.

I hope y'all are well.
________________________
Making music in the moment

Improv accordionist Mark Growden really knows how to play the room

July 25, 2004

By JOHN BECK
THE PRESS DEMOCRAT

A few months ago at San Francisco's Cafe Du Nord, Mark Growden stole the show. That might have made it just another average night for the bellowing multi-instrumentalist, except for the fact that it wasn't really his show to steal.

Taking the stage at San Francisco folk singer Sean Hayes' CD-release party, Growden serenaded him with a song from his Sex Trilogy (not printable in a family paper) and sealed the performance with a big fat kiss.

It was sloppy and coy and precocious, but paired with a Kurt Weill dirge of a melody, it was a kiss-me-or-kill-me moment.

When Growden takes over Zebulon's Lounge in Petaluma for a midnight show Saturday, expect dark waltzes, carnival asides, raucous covers, singing through the back of a banjo and maybe, just maybe, a lover's response to Aretha Franklin's "I Never Loved A Man (The Way That I Love You)."

These days the hardest-working accordion player in the Bay Area has a new toy, spurning the piano accordion for the chromatic five-key version. Taking a break from composing songs for Sonoma County actor/filmmaker Robert Pickett's upcoming musical, "Sydney Town," the Oakland musician who's often compared to Tom Waits talked prison songs, Coltrane and Stravinsky.

Question: You've played Zebulon's before, how do you like that space?

Answer: I love it. I don't even use the stage, I just get out in the middle of the room or else I get up on top of the bar. That's the way I prefer to play -- the less layers between me and the audience the better. That's definitely one of my main philosophies: play the room. My primary medium isn't music or song or the instruments -- it's really the moment.

Q: How conscious are you of being an entertainer -- I'm thinking of you singing in the back of your banjo or the last time I saw you at Cafe Du Nord.

A: Oh yeah, Sean Hayes' release party -- he and I are good friends. I'm very aware since I've done lots and lots of theater and dance. I improvise a lot within the structure of my songs. Like I'll change the words or I'll dedicate a song to someone and go sit on their lap.

Q: With some performers if you've seen one of their shows, you've seen them all.

A: Exactly. I do play a lot and I do have a nice return crowd.

Q: Talk about the first time you heard grassroots folklorist Alan Lomax's field recordings.

A: I just broke down sobbing. It was just so powerful and so beautiful. The music that's rocked me the most would have to be the recordings of prison songs, Stravinsky and Coltrane. All three to me are drawing on the same basic human element. What I care about in music is soul and passion.

Q: The rumor is you're relearning the accordion. Is that true?

A: I used to play the piano accordion and now I switched over to the older system -- the chromatic five-row.

Q: Why?

A: I don't really play the piano. I've studied music and theory and composition, so I know piano. If you told me to play this chord or that chord I can do it. But when you tell me to put a few in a row, quickly, I'm not very good at that. It's all linear, whereas the style of accordion I play now has five rows of buttons and it's more geometric. Even now, when I do addition and multiplication, I see numbers as these shapes that kind of flip over and land on each other in my head.

Q: It sounds like the video game, Tetris.

A: Yeah, exactly. That's how I do arithmetic.

Q: Has it opened up your songwriting?

A: Yeah. It's definitely opened up my improvising. But I've only been doing it a little over a year, so here I am performing five nights a week and touring all over the U.S. playing an instrument that in the big scheme of things I barely know how to play.

Q: It must be a little daunting.

A: Of course it is.

Q: But it helps you keep the passion going?

A: Definitely. My dream is one day, when my ship comes in, to take some time and really study voice and intensively study accordion; go to Europe where they play this style of accordion and really just woodshed.
